On fiction and deceit
I came across this thought-provoking quote while watching the film “Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary”:
We ought to know that fiction film is by definition less illusory and much less deceitful than so-called documentary cinema, because both director and spectator know that it’s fiction, which is to say that its truth is conveyed through the imagination. On the other hand, documentary cinema hides its fiction and its imaginings behind the façade of reality.
